ABOUT THE EVENT
The largest and strongest authoritarian regimes, that currently influence the European Union and have an impact on its external policies, are undoubtedly those in Russia, China, and Turkey. Although with a different level of state control as well as the relationship with the EU, their impact varies across Europe, and highly depends on countries’ capacities and tools to affect external and internal policies in different parts of the EU.
EuroPolicy in cooperation with the Prague Office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and EURACTIV Slovakia cordially invites you to the second of the 3-part stakeholder discussion series on the (Semi-)Authoritarian Regimes and their legitimacy claims in Central and Eastern Europe.
The May 15 event shall discuss the prospects and challenges of Turkish cooperation with the CEE countries. Current relations are primarily determined by strategic matters – by the membership in NATO as well as by the cooperation with regards to the European Union. Given the enormous market and the existing forms of economic and cultural cooperation, a closer partnership of Turkey and V4 countries could bring an array of benefits. But how to reach it if the countries’ capacities to uphold the rule of law have been vanishing away? Moreover, little knowledge of domestic political situation, historical context and economic matters significantly decrease the Visegrad countries’ capability to deepen their engagement with Turkey.
Following the development during the coronavirus crisis, experts will look into the political and commercial activities of Turkey at home and abroad, particularly in Central Europe. They will discuss the consequences of continuous economic crisis for the regime, as well as the outlook for the administration that continuously steers further away from democracy.
