The largest and strongest authoritarian regimes, that currently influence the European Union and have an impact on its external policies, are undoubtedly those in Russia, China, and Turkey. Although with a different level of state control as well as the relationship with the EU, their impact varies across Europe, and highly depends on countries’ capacities and tools to affect external and internal policies in different parts of the EU.
EuroPolicy in cooperation with the Prague Office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and EURACTIV Slovakia cordially invites you to the first of the 3-part online discussion series on the (Semi-)Authoritarian Regimes and Their Legitimacy Claims in the Central and Eastern Europe.
The event shall connect experts, stakeholders and practitioners from the region, discussing not only the ways in which Russian regime, which seems to be cementing its power for the foreseeable future, initiates its activities and policy engagement with the EU.
Central Europe and V4 countries are of interest for Moscow, as the rise of populist and undemocratic sentiments keeps on finding support amongst many politicians. Moreover, as the established institutions of CEE countries remain weaker than in the older EU Member States, influence coming from strong foreign regimes finds its fruitful soil, which further undermines the capacity of the European Union. Yet Europe, even the region of the CEE, is willing to find a way to keep on vital and practical dialogue with Moscow.
The stakeholder online discussion intends to connect people active in the area and contribute to the region-wide debate on political intention of Russia in the CEE. It shall investigate the details of Russia’s foreign policy towards the EU and particularly the Central European countries, give floor to detailed examination of Moscow’s external policies, intentions, plans and also seek fo directions of the future possibilities in cooperation with Russia.
